Mira was preparing for a short presentation when she noticed an empty space on the shelf. The blue folder was usually there. She looked under the desk and found a pencil, but the folder was still missing. For a moment, she thought someone had taken it without asking.
Rafi was reading near the window. Instead of accusing him, Mira asked, “Have you seen the blue folder?” Rafi looked up and pointed to a dry desk. “I moved it because there was water near the shelf,” he said. “I was going to tell you after I found the supervisor.” He showed her a damp patch beside the window.
Mira thanked him, and they checked the papers together. Nothing was wet. They reported the damp area and agreed to leave a note whenever they moved shared materials. The folder had not disappeared. What changed was Mira’s understanding of the situation—and their plan for communicating next time.

Set the scene
“Mira was checking the shelf when the bell rang.” Was checking gives the activity in progress; rang names an event. “While Rafi was reading, Mira was looking for the folder” describes two activities in progress. When and while connect clauses, but the meaning of the event determines the tense; do not choose mechanically from one word.
Check agreement and spelling
I/he/she/it was; you/we/they were. Add-ing to the main verb: looking, checking, writing. Negative: “They were not arguing.” Question: “Was she reading the note?” A continuous form does not mean the action lasted a long time; it presents the action as in progress at a relevant point.
Use time to clarify
“At four o’clock, they were preparing the cards. Ten minutes later, they finished.” Angka waktu ini model cerita. Kalimat pertama menunjukkan keadaan berlangsung; kedua memberi batas selesai. Pembaca tidak harus diberi setiap menit, hanya waktu yang membantu memahami hubungan peristiwa.
