Abu al-Fida berkata, “Orang-orang India membakar diri.

مَا بَرِحُوا berarti mereka masih terus; بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ pada arak-arakan berarti di hadapannya. Istilah الْفَرَنْج dalam bacaan dipakai bagi orang-orang Eropa.
Frasa عَلَى قَوْلٍ dan kata قِيلَ memperlihatkan bahwa sebagian informasi dilaporkan sebagai pendapat. Bentuk تَذْكِيَةً، تَطْهِيرًا، تَخْلِيصًا menerangkan tujuan menurut orang yang dikisahkan.

In the past people thought that the chroniclers of Alexander's expedition regarding these hermits and their deeds contained exaggerations and were nothing more than fictional stories. The reason was that this event felt strange and deviated from the habits and actions of the nations they were used to knowing and witnessing. Then Europeans entered India and the British conquered it. Seekers of knowledge, traders and religious preachers from Europe came there and began to study the people and their customs.
According to the authors, they found that the writings of previous historians did not contain errors. Indians still maintain old habits and behavior, and European civilization until the time of the author has not been able to eradicate them. News about these ascetics had been known among the Greeks since Alexander's expedition. There is even an opinion that this news has been known since Pythagoras explored eastern countries, reached India, and studied science and philosophy from his wise men.
The news about these ascetics was not only known to Greek and Roman scholars. The news also reached Arab scientists who recorded it in their works. An example of Ash-Syahrastani's writing in the book al-Milal wa an-Nihal is sufficient. He said, "Among the wise men of India there were those who, when they felt that their lives had been tarnished, threw themselves into the fire with the intention of purifying their souls, cleansing their bodies, and freeing their spirits."
Abu al-Fida said, "The Indians set themselves on fire. If someone among them wishes to do so, he comes to the king's door and asks for permission to burn himself. After obtaining permission, the person wears various patterned silks and places a wreath of fragrant herbs as a crown on his head. Drums and cymbals are paraded in front of him, while a fire is lit for him. He goes around the market place with his family and relatives surrounding him. When he approaches the fire, he takes a dagger and wounds his stomach with it, then throws himself into the fire."

وَخَرَجَتِ الطُّبُولُ وَالصُّنُوجُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ — and out came drums and cymbals before him
وَقَدْ أُجِّجَتْ لَهُ النِّيرَانُ، — while fires were kindled for him,
وَيَدُورُ كَذَلِكَ فِي الْأَسْوَاقِ — and he went about thus in the marketplaces
وَحَوْلَهُ أَهْلُهُ وَأَقَارِبُهُ، — and around him his family and relatives,
حَتَّى إِذَا دَنَا مِنَ النَّارِ — until when he approached the fire
أَخَذَ خَنْجَرًا بِيَدِهِ — he took the dagger with his hand
وَشَقَّ بِهِ جَوْفَهُ، — and split with it his stomach,
— then threw himself into the fire.
